Decode your baby’s poop! What it Means and How to Deal
There are more diapers than changing them and re-changing them! Did you know that the contents of your baby’s diaper can be a good indicator for their health? The color of your baby’s poop can help point out whether or not their bowel movements are going properly. It can give you the warning signs for any potential issues that need to be given taken care of. Read on to learn more about how to decode your baby’s poop and to tackle other related situations.
The Colors and What They Mean
Here are some of the most common colors for babies’ poop and what they mean:
Black. This is the common color in the first few days of your baby’s life. It’s caused by the amniotic fluid, skin cells, mucus and other materials in the baby’s system from the uterus. You can expect to see this color change once your baby starts receiving milk. It will help rid their system of these materials.
Bright yellow. This is the common color in breastfed babies. It indicates that the milk is moving smoothly through their digestive system and is a sign that everything’s functioning normally.
Green. This is another common color, particularly in breastfed babies. It means that the milk is moving more slowly through the baby’s digestive system. However you must immediately contact a pediatrician if the color is accompanied by a runny consistency and mucus or fever.
Orange. This is a common color in both breastfed and formula fed babies, and is also an indicator of normal functioning.
Brown. This is a common color in formula fed babies and those who started to eat solid foods. It’s another indicator that the milk is moving slowly through their digestive system.
Red. It can be seen in babies who ate red solids. The color should return to normal after they pass their next stool. If it doesn’t go away or if your baby hasn’t eaten red solids, then make sure you call your pediatrician.
White. This color may indicate that your baby is having problems with digestion. It may suggest a lack of bile from the liver that’s making it difficult for food to be digested.  Make sure you check with your pediatrician to rule out any health issues.
Causes of Diarrhea and What You Can Do
Now that we decoded the colors, let’s talk about something many new mothers, unfortunately, have to face: babies’ diarrhea. This not-so-pleasant situation is common in babies because their immune systems are weaker than those of adults. As a result, it makes them more prone to stomach conditions.
So, what causes diarrhea in the first place? Here are some of the possible causes:
  • Allergy to milk, eggs, or peanuts
  • Antibiotics
  • Unclean surroundings or the baby putting toys or objects on the ground in their mouth
  • Rotavirus; a virus which affects kids below two years of age.
Home remedies that can help relieve your baby’s diarrhea
  • Oral rehydration solution. Treating dehydration (symptoms include: dry mouth, dry throat, thirst and decrease in urination frequency or volume) is one of the key factors to treating your child’s diarrhea. You can either buy the rehydration solution from the pharmacy or make it a home.  Boil a litre of filtered water and allow it to cool. Then, add six teaspoons of sugar and a teaspoon of salt till they completely dissolve. Give it to your baby at regular intervals to compensate for the loss of salts and fluids in their body. (Recommended age is 2+ months).
  • Bananas. They’re easy to eat, rich in potassium, kids love their taste, and will replenish the nutrients lost from their bodies. You can serve them mashed to make them even easier for your baby to eat. Bananas are also rich in other nutrients, like: calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and vitamin A and B6. (Recommended age is 6+ months).
  • Coconut water. Very helpful in replenishing the fluids lost from your baby’s body. It’s also rich in vitamin C, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium, calcium and others. Give it to your baby 2 – 3 times a day at least. (Recommended age is 7+ months).
Nutmeg. Cut an apple and boil it till it’s tender. Then add a teaspoon of sugar and two pinches of nutmeg, and serve it to your baby. (Recommended age is 10+ months).
